USER Information

User Registration

To become a registered user of the MS, you must be trained and signed off to use each particular instrument or ancillary piece of equipment or individual facility. Details of each of these can be accessed on the equipment pages. Training is set up by appointment with the relevant staff member. The length of training will vary according to the complexity of the technique and the experience of the user. Before beginning training, a user must fill in a registration form that supplies contact and billing information.

The registration form is available in a rack in the MS and is also available as a PDF file ready for printing. Information required before access to the MS will be given include:

  • University/Department account number for billing.
  • Advisor and group names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • A description of the research project to be worked upon.
  • A Beckman keycard serial number. (A refundable deposit for a keycard is required, payable in the Beckman main office).

Once training is completed this form will be signed and it can be turned into the security office at BI in exchange for keys and/or I-card access. Your I-card will be activated within two business days of the Beckman's office receipt of the completed registration form.

After training is completed, you will be also be given an ITG account which includes logins to our UNIX and Windows NT workstations, disc space for file storage including Macintosh volumes, and a place to receive email (if necessary). This account is necessary in order to use the web based calendar system which is used to reserve time on all the equipment in the MS.

Lab policies will be discussed during the training sessions.

If you wish to use the Beckman printers, you must fill out the necessary forms (log in with your netid). Access to the Beckman printers does not come with access to the ITG facilities

Reservation of Equipment

Equipment can be reserved using the web based calendar system. Users will need an ITG account to use the calendars. Please try to use courtesy in making reservations especially when reserving heavily used equipment. Consult the policies pages for some general guidelines for reserving time. Please note that the ITG reserves the right to charge for any time that has been reserved but is not used.

Problems

For any queries or problems regarding the MS facilities equipment, computers or software please contact The Microscopy Suite. Emergency contact numbers are also posted on the main door of the suite and BI security can be reached at 4-2692.

Staff

MS staff members are available to assist or consult by appointment. If unsure which staff member to consult please contact Scott Robinson or send mail to The Microscopy Suite.

Hours

Once registered with the MS a user has access to the facilities 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Staff is available for consultation and assistance by appointment.
