About the Visualization Laboratory

The Visualization Laboratory provides computing, imaging and multimedia resources for scientific visualization, image analysis and research presentation. Its imaging resources include a variety of professional cameras and photographic equipment, multiple flatbed scanners, slide / negative scanners, 3D surface scanners and printers, a microCT scanner, and a film recorder. Powerful Mac, Linux, and PC workstations provide software for image analysis, enhancement and editing; molecular modeling, simulation, analysis, and compositing; 3D animation and modeling; video capturing and production; and countless other computation-intensive applications.
The Visualization Laboratory's video production suite features multiple studio-quality, non-linear digital video editing systems. These systems allow real-time, full-frame capture of video from a variety of formats. Users can edit video with their choice of video editing software (i.e. Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro) and add effects, titles, transitions and audio. Audio can be acquired and mastered in the lab's two sound-isolation rooms, using a variety of analog and digital sound-enhancement equipment. Users can output to broadcast-quality and/or consumer formats (DVD, HDV, DV, MiniDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, BetaSP/BetaCam, 3/4"/U-matic, HI-8, S-VHS, VHS, VHS-C, D-VHS, DVCAM, VCD, Laserdisc, and others).
One of the primary reasons the Visualization Laboratory presents a unique opportunity to researchers is its constant focus on keeping current with new technologies. The Visualization Laboratory is continuously upgrading systems, software, and hardware while searching out new solutions to computing problems. Its hardware provides resources for high-end work, including large amounts of RAM, 21"+ LCD panels, graphic accelerators and other enhancements. Its imaging hardware includes significantly powerful equipment to aid in image acquisition and analysis. The Visualization Laboratory provides a full-time consultant to help its users and an extensive staff with a broad range of expertise. All of these things come together in one package to provide the necessary variety of hardware, software and staff in a single environment.
