Working in conjunction with UIUC Bioengineering Professor Michael Insana in the Ultrasonic Imaging Laboratory, graduate student researcher Rebecca Yapp combined 3D laser scanning and 3D printing (rapid prototyping) to generate a custom ultrasound transducer holder for modification of an existing system. Yapp scanned the transducer in the Visualization Laboratory using the Next Engine 3D laser scanner. She then used the 3D geometry generated by the scanner to create a computer model for 3D printing of the custom holder. The 3D printing was completed in the UIUC Mechanical Science and Engineering Department's Ford Concurrent Design and Manufacture Lab.
