Basaltic Igneous Rock
Macro photograph captured in the Visualization Laboratory of basaltic igneous rock, recovered from the oceanic crust at Hess Deep, 110Km west of the Galapagos Islands. Part of a study by Michael A. Stewart of the Geology Department at the the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in which phase proportions were estimated by optical microscopy of thin sectioned rock to study the mineralogy and identify the proportions of equilibrium phases.
