Songbirds are characterized by their ability to learn their own song, much in the way humans acquire language. In one songbird species, the zebra finch, the juvenile stage is the optimal time to learn to sing. The zebra finch is studied during its development and in adulthood to identify the neural mechanisms that control song learning and recognition, in efforts to better understand the essential components of vocal learning in both birds and humans.
