Photograph of the massive framework building scleractinian coral Montastraea annularis, collected from the leeward coral reef tract on the southern Caribbean island of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. This work is part of ongoing research into microbiological and environmental influences on coral skeletal growth and disease resistance by the lab of Professor Bruce W. Fouke at UIUC. The image was captured by ITG staff Jessica Wetzler using the Visualization Laboratory's macro-photography system.
